1. Sheet Size Selection: 4x8 vs 4x12 Panels
Selecting the proper drywall panel size reduces the total number of butt joints, saving labor during taping and mudding:
- 4 ft × 8 ft Sheet (32 Sq. Ft.): Standard residential size. Easier to handle for 1 or 2 workers and maneuvers around stairs and tight doorways.
- 4 ft × 12 ft Sheet (48 Sq. Ft.): Preferred by professional commercial drywall contractors for long uninterrupted walls and high ceilings. Reduces vertical seams by 33%.
2. Joint Compound & Tape Takeoff Ratios
Finishing drywall to Level 4 smooth finish (standard paint-ready finish) requires 3 coats of joint compound (all-purpose mud for embedding tape, topped with lightweight finishing mud):
